Sydney Cosmetic Surgery - Dermal Fillers
Aesthetic Surgery Centre specialists use temporary and semi-permanent dermal fillers to improve your skin appearance...
Dermal fillers are used in cosmetic surgery to improve the skin’s appearance and to fill defects in the skin:
- for fine lines e.g. around eyes
- for thicker lines e.g. above lips and around mouth and chin area
- for deeper lines e.g. nasolabial folds and lip enhancement (called “Paris lips”)
Dermal fillers are divided between temporary and semi-permanent.
Temporary dermal fillers
There are many different types of dermal fillers on the market. We use bovine collagen (Zyderm and Zyplast), human collagen (Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast) and synthetic hyaluronan gels (Restylane, Perlane, Esthelis and Juvederm).
Collagen is a natural protein that cushions and supports the skin. Our skin normally contains this collagen framework of interwoven fibres, but becomes broken down due to age, injury, disease or sun damage.
If you choose to have the bovine collagen, a pre-test on the arm is required one month prior to the treatment, to eliminate the possibility of having an allergic reaction (redness, swelling, pain). No testing is required with the human collagen.
Hyaluronan Gel is based on a natural substance called hyaluronic acid, which is found throughout the human body. One of its functions is to keep the skin moist and elastic. The gel is made from a naturally occurring material, providing cushioning and support within the skin.
When do you use collagen and when do you use hyaluronan?
Hyaluronan gel and human collagen are used in patients that are allergic to collagen, or do not have time to have the preliminary test required before treatment.
Our staff will advise you about the most suitable type of treatment for your needs.
Semi permanent dermal fillers
Sculptra is an injectable material containing poly-L-lactic acid that help lift and smooth deep lines wrinkles and furrows. This dermal filler works by stimulating the production of the body’s own collagen. The body, without the risk of allergy, absorbs it slowly and naturally. You will need to have one to two follow up treatments, depending on your age and skin type. Results may last for more than 18 months.
Dermal filler procedure
- If possible, remove all makeup before the treatment
- If desired, a cream may be applied for 30 minutes to numb the area first
- Local anaesthesia may also be injected into the area
- The dermal filler is injected directly into the skin using the finest needles
- The procedure takes about half an hour to an hour and is performed in our Aesthetic Surgery Clinic
- You may go home or straight back to work immediately
After your dermal filler treatment
Do not use oil based make up or moisturisers for the first 48 hours. Do not touch the area with unwashed hands.
Any redness or crusts should settle in 24 to 48 hours.
Any small lumps under the skin can be massaged with a water-based moisturizer several times a day until gone. Sculptra patients will have specific after treatment instructions; which will be discussed in depth with your doctor.
Please notify us of any persisting lumpiness, redness or itching to the treated area. Bruising can occur, but will resolve in a few days.
What results to expect from temporary dermal fillers
Improvement is immediate although a second top up treatment may be necessary with hyaluronic acid. The effects last around six months, although can last longer depending on area injected and skin type.
A booster or top up treatment is advisable every 6 to 12 months with both collagen products and hyaluronic acid.
What results to expect from semi permanent dermal fillers - (Sculptra)
Even though a small difference may be noted several days after the first treatment, a second treatment must be performed about 4 weeks following the initial one, to stimulate more collagen production.
What types of treatments other than dermal fillers are available?
