Rhinoplasty improves the proportion and appearance of your nose and face, for aesthetically or reconstructive purposes.

Rhinoplasty is the surgical procedure performed in order to improve the function or the appearance of your nose. It can be performed to meet aesthetic goals or for reconstructive purposes, for example to correct trauma, birth defects or breathing problems.
Rhinoplasty can be performed under a general or with local anaesthetic. There are two types of rhinoplasty, following the reshaping needs:
- closed rhinoplasty, where incisions are made inside the nostrils, suits minor nose reshaping procedures;
- open rhinoplasty, where a tiny incision is also made across the columella (the bit of skin separating the nostrils), is more indicated for major nose reshaping operations.
Methodology
First, the plastic surgeon separates soft tissues from the underlying structures. He then reshapes the cartilage and bone. In some cases, the surgeon may shape a small piece of the patient's own cartilage or bone to strengthen or change the structure of the nose.
Pain management
Rhinoplasty is not a particularly painful procedure. Most people remain at home for a week. If there are external sutures, they are removed 4 to 5 days after surgery. The periorbital bruising lasts two weeks. The swelling subsided over several months, the majority in the first one or two. Due to wound healing, there are minor and subtle shifting and settling of the nose over the first year.
After the operation
Immediately after your rhinoplasty, your plastic surgeon will apply an external splint to help the nose maintain its new shape. This will also provide some extra protection for your nose during the healing process and is to be worn for six to eight days.
Complications
Several complications may arise in rhinoplasty, although this plastic surgery procedure is usually considered to be safe.
- Post operative bleeding: uncommon, often resolves without needing treatment.
- Infection: rare, can occasionally progress to an abscess, requiring surgical drainage under general anaesthetic.
- Adhesions (scars that form to bridge across the nasal cavity from the septum to the turbinates): rare but may cause nasal obstruction to breathing and usually need to be cut away.
- Septal perforation (hole being inadvertently made at the time of surgery in the septum): may cause chronic nose bleeding, crusting, difficult breathing and whistling with breathing.
Other types of complications may arise, but are very uncommon when rhinoplasty is performed by an accredited plastic surgeon.
